Description
The techniques of weaving industry including luntaya acheik could be woven the locals proficiency. It was the most flourishing period in Konbaung dynasty (1752-1885). In later times, the people had less interested in wearing acheik garment due to the political and economic difficulties.
Around 2000, Myanmar traditional dress especially acheik garment was mostly worn State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Since then, the acheik becomes popular and in great demand among Myanmar women. In 2010, a acheik design “Aung San Suu Kyi acheik” worn by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi became very popular amongst women all over Myanmar. This acheik design was so in high demand that producers struggled to meet demands. This garment was begun to make by handloom and later the locals changed producing power loom, screen printing, and computerized printing made replicas to make the design more accessible to the general public. Although her style of dress was already typical of Myanmar women’s traditional dress, her style further has led to more recognition in the female community than ever before. Especially, the appearance of acheik longyis as the favorite dress for Myanmar women attending novitiations, weddings, graduations, and State-level ceremonies are highly valued and worn. This indicates favor the feminine beauty and grace that acheik longyi illuminate. In addition, they are a clear indicator of national spirit and preservation of culture amongst the wearers of this traditional dress.
When she meets with international leaders, she mostly wears acheik longyi. As a result, acheik garments are recognized in foreign countries as well as within Myanmar itself. Therefore, she plays an important role about the acheik.
